Installation

If you have troubles with the installation, read the Tips & Tricks section first.

To use the Openfietsmap on your computer,Garmin's mapbrowser Basecamp or Mapsource is required. Only with this software, you can view the map, make and edit tracks and routes, add waypoints etc and send parts of the map to your Garmin receiver. Please note that Mapsource has been discontinued, but it's for older computers still recommended (Basecamp doesn't run under Windows XP anymore).
  • Download and install Basecamp (or optional: Mapsource)
Instructions for Openfietsmap Benelux (Full/Light), Windows version:
  • DownloadOpenfietsmap.zip from this site and unpack it. Run the setup.exe file (the gmapsupp.img is also needed so don't move this file to another place!). It will automatically installthe map in Basecamp or Mapsource, default is the c:garminopenstreetmap folder butany other folder is possible. Depending on your Windows configuration, you must run setup.exe as administrator.
Other OFM versions (Germany, Europe, Alps etc) with (dd-mm-yy_pc).zip file
  • Unpack this and place the folder to a location of your choice, e.g. C:GarminMapsOFM_country_name. Run install.exe to install the map for Mapsource/Basecamp. You can safely move the map later to another location and run install.exe again to update it in Mapsource's register. Depending on your windows configuration, you need to right-click install.exe and run as Administrator.

Amtemu v.0.8.1 for mac. Installing a gmap (Mac OSX) version under Windows

An alternative way to install the map under Windows is to use the gmap version. This is a new format that Garmin uses to install the maps. Big advantage is that the map details are not longer kept in the windows registry, but only copied in a default Garmin map. Disadvantage is that this doesn't work with older Mapsource versions. OFM versions that have a (dd-mm-yy_pc).zip version are installed with Javawa's Mapconverter. To install OpenFietsMap's Benelux (gmap).zip, follow this procedure:
  • Unpack OpenFietsMap (gmap).zip and move the OpenFietsMap (BNL).gmap folder to the default Garmin map folder. The location of this folder depends on the Windows version. In Vista or W7 this is:
  • C:ProgramDataGARMINMaps or
  • C:Users{user}AppDataRoamingGARMINMaps (hidden folder!)
  • c:documents and settingsall usersapplication datagarminmaps

You can also put the map on another folder or drive, make a shortcut and place that shortcut in one of the folders above.

Uninstall the old version first (remove the gmap) or by uninstalling it if it is installed on the old way with the setup.exe in the windows register.

  • Unpack OpenFietsMap (gmap).zip

Maintainance of your installed mapsJaVaWa GMTK is a programm that can help you installing the map in the right folder. JaVaWa GMTK enables you to install these maps. Install the map on your GPS
  • With the Gmapsupp.img file
  1. Download the openfietsmap.zip file and unpack the zip file
  2. Copy the gmapsupp.img file to a garmin folder on the micro SD card or on the internal flash drive of the GPS. Putting the map on a removable Micro SD card is recommended, in case of errors on the map you can have problems with booting the device.
  3. On the latest garmin units you can choose a different name for the img file, and install more maps. With older units like Etrex Legend/Vista or GPSmap 60 can only read one gmapsupp.img file. To install more maps, please use Mapsource or Mapinstall.
  • With Mapsource
  1. Select map area
  2. Drag with your mouse a box around the whole country (or a selected area)
  3. In the list box you can see the selected maps.
  4. Make sure routing is activated!
  5. Mount the GPS or a SD card to your pc and send the selected maps to your device.
  6. Be careful: Mapsource always use the same mapname (gmapsupp.img) when writing on the SD card so existing mapsets with the same name are overwritten!

  • With Basecamp this works via the Mapinstall programm, the only difference is that you cannot see the tile-list anymore.
